My students have always loved the resource linked below. It comes from a book that is unfortunately out of print:

For the Love of Stories by Murray Suid (Monday Morning Books, 1986).

Because it was written pre-internet, there are a few bits that are outdated (how to do research, for instance). But the comic-book format and easy worksheets were always enjoyable for my students.
