THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT
God is the Ancient of Days. He has always been, and will always be. This is the essential characteristic of God. “Who was and is and is to come” as a name, the I AM, Yahweh, carries within it the limitless depth and width and height and length and time of God.
“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As he was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end…” we sing in the Nomine Patri.
We sing this because is shows the essence of who God is. Triune and Limitless. “What is God?” the Westminster Catechism asks with the answer, “God is a Spirit…” continuing on with his attributes. But this part, Spirit, is like nothing else.
WHY IT MATTERS
The Ancient of Days being so BIG, he knows the end from the beginning. He is not bound by time-space. So when he chose to make the world, he made things just the way he wanted, and going in a direction he wanted them to go.
He’s not playing pinball here, hoping to hit us up into this or that space, missing sometimes. He’s not playing a game. He’s got a plan. And that is the core of everything. It’s why he made the world, why he made Adam, why he put that Darn Tree in the garden. It’s why he made Cain. It’s why he made Noah. It’s even why he made trees and flowers and waterfalls and kittens.
He’s got a PLAN, and all these things fall into his plan. The plan and purpose tie into the Ancient of Days because in knowing the PLAN we know him. We know what he’s about. And we know what we’ve got to do to be part of the plan.
“Finding yourself in God’s story,” is a way Michael Horton of the White Horse Inn expresses this.
