THE eBOOK IS LIVE!

The gates of Byzantium are opening! Today, I’m sharing an exclusive excerpt from Trunk of Scrolls to give you a taste of the journey ahead.

Belisarius’s presence struck me as regal, dignified, and mature. The perfect new Roman. He bore a nobleman’s haircut—rounded and short—not a soldier’s. His short beard declared him a diplomat, his Herculean body declared him a seasoned warrior.

As the renowned general walked toward us, his tapestry robe swished and swaggered side to side. The jewel-trimmed fabric, woven in reds and purples, blues and blacks, presented a cacophony of birds: crows, hawks, eagles, vultures. If the garment displayed songbirds or peacocks, I would not know. I only saw the clawed avian.

His arm stretched out toward Byziana. “My dear! To see you again after so many years is a delight to my eyes!” She took his hand and looked at the floor, breathless and speechless, certainly thinking still of her appearance. His words pleased her, for she smoothed her robe again, peeking into his face coyly like she had at the banquet night six years ago.

Was she considering him as a husband? Was she wondering if he would be loyal and faithful and loving? Does she know that he . . .? I commanded the thought to cease.

But what secrets does Marcellus hide? And will Byziana find the hope she’s seeking, or lose everything in the journey?

The answers lie ahead in Trunk of Scrolls.

I have a special treat for you today–a short autobiographical story I wrote about a life-changing experience I had as a little girl in Japan. It’s a bit sensitive, showing parts of my character I sure can’t shake. But it was quite formative. If I hadn’t survived, you wouldn’t be getting this email today. 📚 The End ✏️

From the Desk of Darlene N. Böcek Faith-building Sci-fi Fantasy Stories Hi again Reader! I’m not sure why, but I have trouble using the word “The End” at the end of a story. First of all, it should be clear that the story is over, right? The last lines of a book should already reflect an ending without those two words. But when I write a story, the character and I form a bond. Maybe the reason I have trouble ending a book with “The End” is that for me neither they nor their story is truly…

🕊️ Hope and Hope Again 🕊️

From the Desk of Darlene N. Böcek Faith-building Sci-fi Fantasy Stories Greetings Reader! We’ve been in the midst of a torrent of rain here in Izmir–great for the olive trees, apricot trees, and grapevines, but terrible for the dogs. This is the second greatest rainfall in 88 years of recorded measurement. I calculated the other day to learn that there has been a total of about 1.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools full of water dumped on our farm since the beginning of the year. Wet and rainy,…
