Faith-building Other Worlds

MY ACCIDENT

🚑 It’s been a while since I last wrote, and I wanted to update you on my accident. 🚨

My ankle was majorly messed up. It’s called an “ugly trimalleolar fracture-dislocation.”

Doctors in Pt Townsend fixed the dislocation. But for the repair, I had to go home. I flew from Seattle to Istanbul/Izmir on a 16h trip with the broken foot. ✈️🌍

HEAT WAVE

We arrived in the middle of a heat wave (43*C on my arrival, 109*F)🔥, and my surgery was on Thursday July 24, 8 days after the accident. The bones were successfully all put back together with 2 plates and countless screws.

A couple days later came some complications, which has kept me in the hospital. Then yesterday we had even more complications.

But the hospital is wonderfully Air conditioned, so I’ve felt NOTHING of the heat wave. I’ve slept most of the time, except for a bit of exciting productivity…

VAMPIRES AWAIT

The good news is–

On a couple of my bed-ridden days, I finalized my Vampire short story and have submitted it into the 2025 Ye Olde Dragons anthology. I hope it will be accepted and am anxious to hear back. It’s tentatively called

🧛‍♂️ “Fit to Kill” 🧛‍♂️

In its own way it is faith-building. 😉 That anthology will be released in October. I had also written a longer vampire story with Vampiress Erin that ended up being amazingly beautiful, but too long for the anthology, so I wrote this one instead for the anthology. (I’ll let you know about Vampiress Erin once it’s available.)

As you probably know, I love writing faith-building spins on the classic monster stories, and this annual anthology is a great way for me to get my stories out there side by side with other Christian authors who have similar creative imaginations.

📜 TRUNK OF SCROLLS Audiobook 🐎🐎

In my possession is the final draft of the TOS audiobook production! Here during my last couple days of hospitalization I’ll be proofing that, and look to a immediate launch afterwards.

Can’t wait to share it with you!!

That’s all for this week.

My big lesson here in the hospital is:
In everything give thanks.” 1 Thess 5:18
I’m certainly thankful for all the kind nurses & doctors looking out for me, for the encouraging emails and flowers I’ve received, for the invention of AC, for such excellent AC here in my hospital room, and for my amazing daughter Ela who has stayed next to me every step (or non-step) of the way.

God bless you.

From the Desk of Darlene N. Böcek Faith-building Sci-fi Fantasy Stories Hello to March! And hello to you Reader! I have a special treat for you today–a short autobiographical story I wrote about a life-changing experience I had as a little girl in Japan. It’s a bit sensitive, showing parts of my character I sure can’t shake. But it was quite formative. If I hadn’t survived, you wouldn’t be getting this email today. 📚 The End ✏️

📚 The End ✏️

From the Desk of Darlene N. Böcek Faith-building Sci-fi Fantasy Stories Hi again Reader! I’m not sure why, but I have trouble using the word “The End” at the end of a story. First of all, it should be clear that the story is over, right? The last lines of a book should already reflect an ending without those two words. But when I write a story, the character and I form a bond. Maybe the reason I have trouble ending a book with “The End” is that for me neither they nor their story is truly…

🕊️ Hope and Hope Again 🕊️

From the Desk of Darlene N. Böcek Faith-building Sci-fi Fantasy Stories Greetings Reader! We’ve been in the midst of a torrent of rain here in Izmir–great for the olive trees, apricot trees, and grapevines, but terrible for the dogs. This is the second greatest rainfall in 88 years of recorded measurement. I calculated the other day to learn that there has been a total of about 1.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools full of water dumped on our farm since the beginning of the year. Wet and rainy,…
