I’m a reader. I’m in the midst of a major final edit of a book that has taken more time than it should to get into final form, so reading always defaulted to the “read + edit” of my own book, instead of reading for pleasure.
But lately, even as I’ve taken the Initiative to read for pleasure, I’ve become more and more discouraged as I’ve read. Sometimes, I start a book–but then I put it down and can’t find the oomph to pick it up again. I’ve recently had so many of those false starts that I moved to audiobook.
The benefit with audiobook, of course, is you can multi-task. So it’s easy to “get permission” (from your bossy-self) to read and keep reading because you are also getting laundry or housework or cooking (or crocheting) done at the same time.
Over the past year, this was my go-to for reading.
With audiobook + multitask, I found I was a bit more patient with the reading because (with a good narrator) the story goes by faster. I’ve branched out into secular fantasy to see what all the hype is over Brandon Sanderson or others.
I don’t want to waste my life with reading meaninglessly. My deep belief is I should benefit from the reading, not simply entertainment, but education (new worlds, new writing styles) and spiritual growth (only possible with books that include Christ). So this lack of education/growth is probably another reason why I drop out of a book.
However, after breaking my ankle in July, I’ve been laid up.
And being laid up, I made a discovery.
I have done more reading over the past 2 weeks than I’ve done in the past 2 years (EVEN INCLUDING AUDIOBOOKS).
The reason is: I discovered Tracy Higley.
Over the next few days, I’m going to talk about the books I’ve read. And though I usually try to write reviews, it’s been ages since I’ve felt strongly enough to write about it on my dusty blog. Her Ancient World series changed my view of what Christian fiction CAN BE!
But I want you to know what I found.
Stay tuned… (Here and on my newsletter)
