Faith-building Sci-fi Fantasy Stories

Hey there Reader–

I use and heartily recommend the M’Cheyne Bible reading plan. This morning I read a life-changing passage in Mark 7:23-30.

Phoenicians, Dogs, & the Character of God

The story takes place in Tyre. Jesus is brought into a house secretly to give him a bit of a pause amidst all the crowds. But the word is spread, and a young mother discovers that he has come. She rushes in and falls at his feet.

The woman was a Phoenician Greek. While Christ ultimately came to save the entire world, his purpose centered on building faith within the Jewish people. When the woman asks him to heal her little daughter who is possessed of an evil spirit, he pushes back. He explains that he’s working on the foundation right now.

We might feel that’s a bit racist. But it’s not. It’s a whole-hearted desire to obey God in the manner of his calling. First the Jews, then the Gentiles. Even this is tied to the promises of God to Abraham thousands of years earlier. Abraham’s faith would be a blessing to all the world.

But we know moms. She would not let that go. Her daughter needed healing by Christ.

But what we do not commonly know is the relationship of Phoenicians to their dogs.

While Judaism would allow working dogs, having a dog for companionship alone was unacceptable. This centuries-old aversion to dogs is reflected in the Yiddish proverb: “A Jew with a dog? Either it’s not a Jew or it’s not a dog.”**

On the other hand, Phoenicians cared for dogs, buried their dogs with love. SOURCE. Down the coast, the Canaan Dog was even bred in Ashkelon by Phoenicians. (Wikipedia. link pdf) (The pdf shows how the respect toward dogs was brought to Ashkelon by the Phoenicians.)

The Phoenician woman referred to this contrast in her appeal.

“Even the dogs under the table eat the scrap food.”
And Jesus replied. “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.”

What is the subtext here? I think it has to do with her understanding of dogs. And her understanding of both Christ and the character of God.

God made dogs.

If you know dogs, you know what a gift they are to mankind. They love you even when you aren’t patient or kind to them. They’re always glad to see you in the mornings. They’ll care for your wounds. They’ll protect you to the death.

Sure, they’re not humans. Yet, the care of a righteous man overflows in the way he treats his animals: Proverbs 12:10. This is the characteristic of God that she is appealing to.

This woman was making an analogy to highlight the Phoenician idea that family includes people and the pets. She saw the larger family of God, knowing God’s mercy would spread. And that Christ held that mercy in his hands.

She acknowledged an understanding of God’s mercy that overflows. And Christ commended this deep statement about overflowing mercy.

The little daughter was healed from a distance because her mother … I risk to say … because her mother loved dogs. Because she saw God’s character in the gift that dogs are to humanity.

Faith means believing in WHO God is. This young mother was commended and her request granted because she deciphered then declared her faith in Christ’s larger PURPOSE: the ultimate expansion of the family of God to include Gentiles.

BOOK NEWS:

THE YEAR OF THE AUDIOBOOK As I shared last week, The Last Noel is now on audiobook (see below). Meanwhile, Trunk of Scrolls audiobook is being uploaded into Audible. It will also soon be available on Spotify– and on Youtube with a special feature I’ll soon surprise you with. (Shh. Can’t tell you yet.)

Since the Trunk of Scrolls audiobook is long and since it includes some unusual audiobook features, it is taking extra time to prepare.

The better to thrill you with, my dear!

Return to Me Series book covers. I’m finalizing the newly branded cover for second book, Vera’s Story (Return to Me/Me, Myself, and IT). And this week the third book will enter its design phase. A cover is supposed to convey the feeling and a message of other books you’ve read in a similar story in the same genre. As Women’s Fiction and Contemporary Christian with supernatural elements, it’s been a challenge to find the right balance for a cover. But I’m sure we’ve done it. I can’t wait to share the whole set with you.

(But we’ll also keep that under cover for a bit.)

Vera’s Story REWRITE. Vera’s story has been in a completed stage for years. In fact, it was completed before The Last Noel, though The Last Noel pushed its way to publication first.

I felt the story was right, which was why the trilogy launched as a Kickstarter last fall. But after the initial beta read in March, I decided to do a massive shift in the story, essentially rewriting a large part of the book.

I’m thrilled with this change, BUT it means my publishing schedule has been shifted back at least six months. It’s taken quite some effort.

The biggest problem is The Last Noel takes place AFTER Vera’s story. So I have to keep the revision within the established story events.

Great experience. Not so fun. Amazing final product.

I’ll need a team of new beta readers to read this book to confirm it’s ready for market.

If you

  • are interested,
  • have an eye for critique, and
  • are willing to commit to reading this story…

then please sign up here. I’m estimating it will be ready to go at the end of August.

The Last Noel is available on Audible!

(cue the applause 👏 🎶 🥳 🙌 🎉 )

I also just found out something amazing.

ALWAYS DISCOUNTED AUDIOBOOKS

If a book is on Kindle Unlimited (as is The Last Noel) and is also on Audible, then it qualifies as WhisperSync. In other words–after you download the book as a KU book, you’ll have the chance to purchase the audiobook at a huge discount.

A WhisperSync audiobook should cost $5 or $7.

I am not able to see your discount amount from my end–but if you are a Kindle Unlimited customer, this is one of the features of your membership.

In fact, it also means, you don’t need to be an Audible member to get discounted audiobooks! (I just used this feature this week to get 2 books I wanted at a lower discount than my Audible credits would have cost!)

As far as I know, The Last Noel is WhisperSync ready.

👉 If the WhisperSync is activated for you and you’re able to get the Last Noel audiobook this way, please let me know. 👈

I’ll leave you to it. Read on for the Book Mobile.

God bless you

Darlene

**note: Modern scholars say the biblical shunning of dogs is that the Jewish people were recently out of Egypt and this was to keep them from worshipping dogs. “The dog of Scripture had to be put in its place, not for its sake, but for ours.” Source

Do Earwigs Climb into Ears?

Do Earwigs Climb into Ears?

From the Desk of Darlene N. Böcek Faith-building Sci-fi Fantasy Stories Reader**– Research can sometimes put you in a worse place. Let’s talk about the Earwig. The other day friends and I were discussing how REPULSED we are by earwigs. And we asked the common question–Do earwigs actually crawl into ears? Then we made the interesting observation. The earwig is called kulağakaçan in Turkish. That means the-one-that-runs-into-the-ear. We wondered why both Turkish and English uses practically…
